Across the United States, COVID-19 seems to increase its presence as the seasons transition. Last Friday, the United States experienced the highest number of new COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic (Wan and Dupree, 2020). The winter months foster a thriving environment for viruses as the air is less humid and viruses can remain in the air for longer periods of time (Rogers, 2020). Texas hasn’t fared much better as it has seen a spike in total cases and deaths (Google, 2020). It will be interesting to see how COVID-19 forecasting models are adjusted to account for the spike and weather transitions.
The race is on to develop a vaccine for COVID-19 and it appears that its development is getting close to emergency use authorization. Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, believes that the vaccines in development will be available by the end of 2020; however, it will not be an end-all solution to current protective measures in place (Meredith, 2020). Dr. Fauci also states that the vaccine will not prevent contraction of the virus, but prevent the symptoms that lead to serious illness (Khemlani, 2020). These two statements by Dr. Fauci are congruent with each other and it makes sense to practice safety procedures despite a vaccine option.
Protection guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) remain unchanged since last week. The forecast models have shifted a little bit; however, we believe its best to wait and see how the models are adjusted as vaccine developments are put out and as the season transitions.
